Frequently asked questions.

I know you’re a successful Track & Field coach. My child is not an athlete (or perhaps they are, but I have never seen that side of them). Can they still work with you?

YES. Absolutely, yes. I work with all youth — not just athletes. My best work has always been done off the track or off the field. The most meaningful conversations take place when kids come see me about a problem they’re having at home or at school or in their social circle (and nothing to do with their physical fitness). I have always said that I’m a life coach who just so happens to know a thing or two about sports.

What is the cost of an initial consultation?

The initial consultation is free and takes about 50 minutes.

How do I schedule an initial consultation?

Please fill out the brief form on the Contact page. Once I review your information, I will reach out to you to schedule a consultation with your child.

Are parents allowed to be present for the initial consultation?

It’s important that young adults trust me. They have to believe that I am on their side. When parents are present during sessions, that gives the two-against-one impression. Young people feel outnumbered, uncomfortable, and unwilling to truly open up. If parents are hovering nearby during every session, then teenagers jump to the conclusion that I’m a third parent — and that hurts our progress.

I’m a white woman living in a very white area of Colorado, but I know it’s really important to talk about diversity with my family. I don’t know if my kids need a life coach, but I know they need someone like you in their life. Does this make sense?

I’m a black man who has lived in/near Boulder, Colorado for 28 years, so trust me - I fully understand the lack of diversification around here. But I’ve always relished in the opportunity to develop relationships with white folks — whether it’s breaking racial stereotypes or just giving them the opportunity to get to know me and vice versa.

George Floyd has opened up a lot of eyes/hearts/minds. If you’re one of those parents, then THANK YOU. Thank you for admitting that you’ve never really talked about race at the dinner table. Thank you for recognizing that you don’t have many black friends and your kids might not either … not by choice, but perhaps you live in a predominantly white area. Thank you for wanting change.

“Life coach” takes on so many different meanings, but what you’re describing is perfectly aligned with one of my many roles.

Recently, I was invited to be a guest on a podcast called Perspective for Parents and we touched more on this topic. You can listen to the episodes here.

What is your fee for each session and how long is each session?

My fee is $150/session. Each session is 50 minutes.

In the midst of a pandemic, where do you see clients?

Two options: (1) Virtual chat - we do coaching via video conferencing using Doxy, which is a program similar to Zoom/Skype, but is HIPAA-compliant. (2) Outdoors - we meet at a local park/trail. I’ve always found that kids open up more when they are walking as opposed to sitting still. I am happy to do either virtual or in-person meetings depending on your preference. Due to safety precautions and state recommendations, I will not be meeting with kids inside an office at this time.

What is the best way to contact you?

Please email me or give me a call to schedule an initial consultation.

What types of payment do you accept?

I accept cash, check, and Venmo. Please note: I do not accept insurance.

What is your cancellation policy?

A 48-hour notice is required to cancel an appointment. Clients who cancel with less than 48-hours notice will be charged the full fee, unless there is a significant life/death event (i.e., car accident, family death, major emergency). Cancellations for Monday sessions must occur by the Friday before the scheduled sessions. If the client is ill, phone calls or Skype/Doxy can be used in lieu of face-to-face meetings. In the case of child/teen illness, the time will be used for a meeting or phone call with parents.

We are looking for speakers for an upcoming seminar. Are you available for public speaking engagements?

Absolutely. My goal is to reach as many people as possible, so I am available for public speaking events. Please email me for more information about my speaking fees and upcoming availability.

Is there anything else I should know?

Whether you hire me or not, please don’t underestimate your role as a parent. If you read my story, you know that my father died when I was nine years old. My mom was 36 years old when he died. She never remarried. She decided to make sure that her boys had the best childhood and life; she devoted her time and energy to us. She knew I was good at sports and understood the importance that male coaches played in my upbringing. I look at my mother today in awe; I feel like the least I can do is pass along the happiness that she gave to me. Helping kids is my life’s calling; I am passionate about it because I know my life wouldn’t be the same without my mother, my coaches, and the guidance I received along the way.
